Remembering Elden Campbell: NBA Champion & SoCal Hall of Famer

Elden Campbell, a prominent figure in the NBA for 15 years, passed away at the age of 57 in December 2025. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Campbell began his illustrious basketball journey at Morningside High School and Clemson University before being drafted 27th overall by his hometown team, the Los Angeles Lakers, in the 1990 NBA draft. This fulfilled a childhood dream for the lifelong Lakers supporter.

Campbell, primarily playing as a power forward and center, spent nine impactful seasons with the Lakers from 1990 to 1999, earning the nickname “Easy E” from teammates due to his calm and consistent demeanor. His career then saw him play for the Charlotte Hornets (1999-2002), continuing with the team as they became the New Orleans Hornets (until 2003). He also had stints with the Seattle SuperSonics (2003) and the New Jersey Nets (2005). A significant career highlight was winning the NBA championship in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons, where he played from 2003 to 2005, notably defeating his former team, the Lakers, 100-87 in the finals. He concluded his professional career returning to the Pistons in 2005.

His enduring legacy was recognized posthumously with his induction into the SoCal Basketball Hall of Fame in May 2024. Mike Gallups, President of the SCBBHOF, lauded Campbell's outstanding high school, college, and professional careers, particularly his long tenure with the Lakers. While his passing was confirmed by the Los Angeles Times, the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Tributes poured in, including from his former Clemson coach, Cliff Ellis, who remembered Campbell as an “outstanding, giving person” who loved and supported the Clemson program even after retirement, emphasizing the deep loss felt by the “Clemson family.”
