NBA Star’s Home Burglarized: A Trend Targeting Athletes
NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Oklahoma City home was targeted by burglars in late October while he was playing a home game for the Thunder. He confirmed that his loved ones are safe, emphasizing that their well-being is his top priority, regardless of material loss. Police responded to the Nichols Hills residence around 7:45 p.m. on October 30, but the suspects had fled prior to their arrival. No arrests have been made, and it remains unclear if anything was stolen from the home.
This incident highlights a troubling pattern of targeted burglaries against professional athletes. The FBI has issued warnings to sports leagues, explaining that athletes' highly publicized schedules make them easier targets for home invasions compared to other celebrities. Sophisticated burglars reportedly conduct extensive technical and physical surveillance to bypass security systems and efficiently locate valuable items within homes. While there are no benefits for the victims of such crimes, the perpetrators aim to acquire significant wealth.
Several other high-profile athletes have been victimized in similar incidents. In October 2024, homes belonging to Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's home was also targeted in December 2024. Federal authorities have since charged seven men from Chile, believed to be part of an organized South American group, with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property in connection with the NFL star robberies. These men are accused of stealing over $2 million in cash and luxury items, including watches and jewelry, and face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted. These repeated incidents underscore the significant security risks faced by public figures due to their predictable schedules and high net worth.
The recent burglary highlights a worrying trend, as pop culture athletes increasingly find themselves targeted due to their wealth and public visibility.
