Grizzly Bear Attack Injures 11 in BC Wilderness Hike
A terrifying grizzly bear attack injured 11 students and teachers during a walk near Bella Coola, British Columbia, on Thursday, November 20, at approximately 1:46 p.m. The BC Emergency Health Services received an urgent call regarding an “animal attack” on a trail near Highway 20 on the province’s Central Coast. The immediate aftermath saw two individuals critically injured and two others seriously hurt, necessitating their transport to a medical facility. Additionally, seven more people received treatment at the scene for less severe injuries but did not require hospitalization. This severe incident quickly prompted a public safety alert from the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service, which confirmed the “grizzly bear attack” and instructed all residents to avoid the forested and river areas near the 4 Mile vicinity until further notice, with RCMP also on scene.
In the wake of the incident, Acwsalcta School, attended by some of the victims, announced its closure for Friday, November 21, citing the “bear incident.” The school promptly communicated its gratitude for its team and students and moved to offer crucial support services to the traumatized community. These supports, available at the Youth Centre, included smudging and brushing ceremonies, individual counseling sessions, and a cultural fire, aiming to provide comfort, community, and debriefing opportunities for those affected. Veronica Schooner, whose 10-year-old son, Alvarez, was part of the hiking group, shared a harrowing account of his experience with the Canadian Press. She revealed that her son was “running for his life” and came so close to the animal that “he even felt its fur.” Schooner further detailed that while many individuals attempted to intervene, a male teacher reportedly “got the whole brunt of it,” sustaining significant injuries that led to his hospitalization. The incident left Alvarez and numerous other students “in shock,” with many crying, underscoring the profound psychological impact of such a violent and unexpected encounter with dangerous wildlife. This event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks present in wilderness environments and the critical need for immediate response and comprehensive post-incident care.
Despite the often playful portrayal of the pop culture grizzly bear in films and cartoons, the reality of encountering one in the wild can be extremely dangerous.
