George Banks: The Pennsylvania Mass Murderer’s Violent Legacy

George Banks, a notorious mass murderer, died in Pennsylvania's Phoenix state prison at the age of 83 on November 2, 2025, due to complications from renal neoplasm, or kidney cancer. He had been serving a life sentence for a horrific shooting spree he committed in 1982 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, an incident widely regarded as one of the worst mass murders in American history at the time.

The rampage, which resulted in 13 deaths and one injury among 14 people shot, began late one night after Banks had been drinking. Armed with an AR-15 rifle, he initiated the violence at his home, where he tragically killed five of his own children, ranging in age from one to six years old, along with the four mothers of his children. His other victims included an 11-year-old who occasionally stayed with his family, a 7-year-old, and a teenager. Dressed in green army fatigues and an ammunition bandolier, Banks left his residence, encountering four teenagers; he fatally shot one and wounded another. He then stole a car and proceeded to Heather Highlands Trailer Park, where police later discovered the bodies of Banks’ son, the child’s mother, her mother, and her nephew. Banks subsequently went to his own mother’s house, where he chillingly confessed, “I killed them. I killed them all,” before engaging in a four-hour standoff with authorities at a friend’s house, eventually surrendering.

Banks was ultimately convicted of 12 counts of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree murder. Although sentenced to life in prison, the state never carried out his execution. State courts intervened, ruling that Banks was not mentally competent to face the death penalty. This decision was met with significant public pushback and frustration, especially from his only surviving victim, Jim Olson, who questioned the utility of a death penalty that is not utilized. Banks spent decades incarcerated, with his death marking the final chapter of a life forever associated with an unimaginable act of mass violence and the enduring grief it caused.
