Wicked: For Good’s New Songs Carry Hidden Political Messages
The upcoming film, “Wicked: For Good,” introduces two new songs, “There’s No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble,” which composer Stephen Schwartz reveals carry significant hidden political statements not present in the original Broadway musical. These additions aim to resonate with contemporary audiences by addressing modern societal and political anxieties.
“There’s No Place Like Home,” performed by Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, was penned by Schwartz during the Covid-19 pandemic. He explains that the song encapsulates the complex and often conflicted emotions many Americans harbor towards the current state of their country. Schwartz notes the drastic changes in the U.S. over the past decade, posing the question of how individuals respond when they perceive something valuable being lost. Fundamentally, it's portrayed as a love song from Elphaba, a character unjustly villainized, directed towards a deteriorating place. This narrative encourages listeners to reflect on their own deep-seated attachments to places or systems that may not have always served them well, prompting an introspection into why such care persists despite adversity.
The second new track, “The Girl in the Bubble,” focuses on Ariana Grande’s character, Glinda, and her profound political awakening. Schwartz describes this song as Glinda’s “turning point,” where she confronts her past complicity in enabling the deceit and cruelty of Oz’s leadership. Despite her privileged position, Glinda reaches a point where she can no longer tolerate her own inaction or the injustices she has overlooked.
