Texas Couple Found Deceased After Thanksgiving Trip
Greg Lightfoot became concerned on November 27 when his parents, Linda and Gary Lightfoot, did not return to their Lubbock, Texas, home. The couple had earlier driven three hours to Panhandle for a routine Thanksgiving celebration with family. After their non-arrival and no unusual information from relatives, Greg reported them missing. Five days later, authorities made the tragic discovery of their bodies in a remote area of Quay County, New Mexico, several hours from their intended route. Greg described their deaths as a “shock and unexpected,” with an ongoing investigation by the Quay County Sheriff’s Office.
Greg hypothesizes that his parents may have deviated from their planned route after leaving Panhandle, possibly heading towards Amarillo to access I-27. He suspects his mother, who was driving and had no known serious health issues, might have experienced a medical event, such as “mini-strokes,” leading to disorientation; his father no longer drove. Greg believes they might have missed a critical turn, continued towards Groom, and then, realizing their mistake, turned around but were unable to correct their course, ultimately becoming lost in the remote New Mexico landscape.
The couple was discovered together beside their vehicle, which had its trunk open. A poignant detail noted was that Linda was found with a jacket placed over her face and torso, a gesture Greg attributes to his father. While official autopsy results are still pending, it is believed that Linda and Gary Lightfoot succumbed to freezing to death. The couple had shared 62 years of marriage, with Gary serving as a military veteran and law enforcement professional, and Linda building a career in banking. Greg fondly remembered his parents as “interesting, fun people” who enjoyed travel and helping others. Their final Thanksgiving visit, despite the tragic outcome, was seen as a “mixed-blessing,” offering them a last gathering with loved ones, a “good experience to sort of say goodbye,” even if they were unaware at the time.
