Pageant Queen Gets Life for Toddler’s Dorm Room Murder
Former Georgia pageant queen Trinity Poague has received a life sentence for the fatal beating of her boyfriend's 18-month-old son, Romeo Angeles, also known as Jaxton Dru. The sentencing took place on December 5, following her conviction on five counts, including two counts of felony murder. Judge W. James Sizemore Jr. of the Southwestern Circuit Court of Georgia delivered the sentence, emphasizing its appropriateness for the crime, and added an additional 20 years to be served concurrently. Poague, who appeared emotional during the hearing, was arrested in January 2024 after the child was found unresponsive on the Georgia Southwestern State University campus, where she was a student.
Authorities from Sumter County indicated that Poague inflicted “blunt-force trauma to the head and torso” of the toddler in her college dorm room on January 14, 2024. A fellow student, Lilly Waterman, recounted that residents in Poague’s dorm reported hearing a child crying for an extended period, which then abruptly ceased, leaving the community unaware of the tragedy unfolding. This incident deeply affected the university, with Waterman noting its lasting impact on perceptions of the campus.
During the trial, prosecutors presented a motive, asserting that Poague harbored resentment towards the young boy, driven by her desire to have a child with her then-boyfriend. Poague, who had previously been crowned Miss Donalsonville in Georgia, was stripped of her title following her indictment in connection with the toddler's death. The case highlights the severe consequences of child abuse, resulting in a life sentence for the perpetrator and an irreparable loss for the victim's family, leaving a somber mark on the university community and beyond.
