Teen Foster Son Kills Parents, Commits Suicide in NC Tragedy
A devastating incident unfolded in Hoke County, North Carolina, where a 17-year-old foster son allegedly stabbed his foster parents to death before taking his own life. On Monday, October 27, around 6 p.m., Hoke County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a cardiac arrest call at a Raeford residence. Upon arrival, they discovered two unresponsive individuals, identified as Joann Nicole Chavis, 46, and Ted Matthew Chavis, 53, who had died from multiple stab wounds.
Authorities quickly identified the couple's foster son, referred to as “D.P.,” as the primary suspect. A multi-agency manhunt, involving the Hoke County and Columbus County Sheriff’s Offices, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Lake Waccamaw Police Department, tracked D.P. to Lake Waccamaw. Investigators located the teen's car near the Boys and Girls Homes campus, prompting a search of the grounds with a drone team.
When officers approached D.P. in an unoccupied building on the campus, he committed suicide from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Sheriff Roderick Virgil of Hoke County and Sheriff Bill Rogers of Columbus County both extended their condolences to the Chavis family and praised the inter-agency cooperation during the tragic investigation. Boys & Girls Homes also issued a statement confirming standard lockdown procedures were followed and all youth and staff were safe, cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
