Ole Miss Student Murderer Receives 40-Year Sentence

Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr., 25, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee. Initially facing a capital murder charge, prosecutors agreed to reduce it to second-degree murder. Herrington received 30 years for second-degree murder and an additional 10 years for tampering, with these sentences running consecutively, totaling 40 years to serve. He will also undergo 10 years of post-release supervision. Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Luther delivered a poignant message, stating, “Mr. Herrington, you still have a chance at life. Mr. Lee does not,” urging him to take advantage of that opportunity.

The tragic events unfolded in July 2022 when 20-year-old Jimmie “Jay” Lee disappeared from Oxford, Mississippi. Herrington was arrested two weeks later. The case saw a mistrial in early 2024 when jurors failed to reach a verdict after extensive deliberation, at which point Lee’s body remained unfound, though a judge had declared him deceased. Lee's skeletal remains were later discovered by deer hunters in a wooded area in February, providing crucial evidence that ultimately led to Herrington's guilty plea.

Prosecutors contended that Herrington murdered Lee to conceal their secret sexual relationship. Key evidence included surveillance footage showing Lee leaving his apartment twice on the day he vanished, and Herrington jogging from a parking lot where Lee’s car was later found. It was revealed that Herrington had searched “how long does it take to strangle someone” online before Lee's second visit to his apartment and that the two had exchanged sexually explicit messages. Authorities also noted Herrington picked up a shovel and wheelbarrow from his parents' home on the day of the disappearance, further linking him to the crime. This resolution brings a measure of closure to a complex and highly publicized case.
