Kansas City Chiefs Announce 2031 Relocation to Kansas
The Kansas City Chiefs are officially departing Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri, announcing plans to relocate across state lines to Kansas by 2031. This significant move involves a massive $4 billion project, encompassing a brand-new stadium and a comprehensive mixed-use development. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, alongside Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and other state officials, confirmed the relocation following approval from the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council. The Chiefs' current lease at Arrowhead Stadium expires after the 2030 NFL season, with the new facility expected to be ready for the 2031 season.
A crucial aspect of this deal is the substantial public funding, with the state of Kansas committing to cover approximately 60 percent of the project's cost through STAR bonds, making it one of the most publicly funded stadium deals in NFL history. The new stadium will be constructed in Wyandotte County, strategically located near Kansas Speedway and Sporting Kansas City’s stadium, at the intersection of Interstates 70 and 435. While the Chiefs own several plots of land in the area, the precise site and an architect are yet to be finalized.
Beyond the stadium, the development includes a separate training facility and team headquarters in Johnson County, surrounded by mixed-use amenities. This concept aims to replicate the success of other NFL hubs, such as the Dallas Cowboys’ Star in Frisco and the Minnesota Vikings’ Viking Lakes complex, offering a modern, integrated “NFL campus.” This decision comes after the Chiefs abandoned a previous $1.15 billion renovation plan for Arrowhead, with Kansas's funding offer and the opportunity to build a new facility from scratch ultimately swaying the Hunt family.
This marks the franchise’s first move out of Missouri since Lamar Hunt brought the team from Dallas in 1963. Although they will retain the “Kansas City” name, it constitutes an intramarket relocation, similar to moves by teams like the Cowboys and Commanders. The relocation solidifies the Chiefs' future after a 2024 countywide referendum for public funding, which included an Arrowhead renovation, was rejected by voters. The Kansas City Royals, who were part of that joint effort, are still searching for their own long-term stadium solution.
