Florida Fire Rescue Hazing: 4 Arrested, Fired for Waterboarding
Four Marion County Fire and Rescue employees in Ocala, Florida, were arrested and terminated for a “violent hazing incident” involving waterboarding a 19-year-old coworker. Commissioner Carl Zalak denounced the “disgraceful” behavior, stating it would “simply not be tolerated.” The arrested individuals—Edward Kenny III, Seth Day, Tate Trauthewein, and Kaylee Bradley—face charges including kidnapping, robbery, and battery, highlighting the severe legal and professional risks. All four were fired by Fire Chief James Banta, confirming no benefits exist for such misconduct, only dire consequences.
The incident on November 16 at Fire Station 21 began with the victim ignoring initial hazing, but it quickly escalated. Examples of the assault included smearing grease, chasing him, and throwing his boots. The situation turned violent when Kenny grabbed and pushed the victim to the ground, followed by Kenny and Day pinning him while Trauthewein removed his belt and pulled down his pants.
The assault intensified as Bradley and Trauthewein demanded the victim's phone password. His refusal led Trauthewein to whip him with his belt while restrained. After failed unlock attempts, the phone locked, prompting Trauthewein to pull down the victim's underwear and strike his bare skin. The group then dragged the victim to another area, where Trauthewein covered his face with a towel and poured water over it, “waterboarding” him three times with a water bottle. The attack ceased only upon an emergency call.
Immediate risks for the perpetrators followed. The fire department promptly alerted the sheriff's office, leading to the arrests. The former employees are now in Marion County Jail, awaiting court appearances for serious charges. This case unequivocally demonstrates the severe repercussions of workplace violence and hazing, highlighting the absolute absence of positive outcomes.
