Teacher Shot by 6-Year-Old Sues Admin Over Ignored Warnings
Former Virginia teacher Abigail Zwerner recently testified in court about the harrowing experience of being shot by a 6-year-old student at Richneck Elementary on January 6, 2023. During her testimony for a $40 million civil lawsuit, Zwerner recounted believing she was dying or already dead after the bullet, which remains lodged in her chest, tore through her hand and struck her. The lawsuit targets former assistant principal Ebony Parker, alleging Parker disregarded numerous warnings about the dangerous student prior to the incident. Zwerner maintains the attack was entirely preventable, claiming Parker failed to act despite clear indications of the boy's threat.
Zwerner detailed the profound and lasting impact of the shooting, both physically and emotionally. She described struggling with basic physical tasks, such as opening a bag of potato chips or water bottles, due to her injuries. Emotionally, she shared an instance of breaking down before seeing the “Hamilton” musical, overwhelmed by the realization it contained dueling scenes. This illustrates the deep psychological trauma she continues to endure, affecting her daily life and emotional well-being.
Further testimony during the trial corroborated the alleged negligence. Another Richneck teacher testified to informing Parker about the student having a gun three times after receiving tips from other students. A different teacher also provided similar information to the assistant principal, underscoring a pattern of ignored alerts. Zwerner stated she did not take additional action herself, trusting that the administration would respond decisively to reports of a weapon in school.
The defense, however, presented counterarguments. Parker's attorney suggested Zwerner could have taken more assertive steps against the student. The defense also contested the severity of Zwerner's physical injuries, highlighting her pursuit of cosmetology school and a new career in beauty. Any potential civil verdict against Parker would be covered by the Virginia Risk Sharing Association, an insurance pool for public bodies. The verdict in this significant case is still pending.
