The Safety Smock: Why Nick Reiner Wore a Prevention Vest

When Nick Reiner appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court, charged with the murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, a distinctive blue suicide prevention vest immediately captured attention. These garments, also known as smocks or blankets, are standard in correctional facilities and medical settings. Their primary purpose is to mitigate the risk of self-harm for individuals deemed a danger to themselves, ensuring basic coverage and safety in high-risk environments. Reiner's appearance in the vest, along with shackles and seated behind glass, underscored the seriousness of his situation as he awaited arraignment.

The design of suicide prevention vests is crucial to their effectiveness. Typically constructed from thick, quilted polyester or nylon, they are deliberately made without sleeves, collars, or ties. Instead, they utilize hook-and-loop closures, making them exceptionally difficult for wearers to manipulate. The fabric itself is engineered to resist easy rolling, folding, or tearing, thereby preventing it from being fashioned into a ligature or noose. To further eliminate potential hazards, individuals often wear no additional clothing underneath the vest, removing access to loose fabric that could be used to cause harm.

Formally known as Safety Smocks, these critical garments were developed in 1989 by nurse Lonna Speer while she worked at the Santa Cruz County jail in California. They have since become a widespread standard in jails and prisons across the United States, even being incorporated into the American Correctional Association’s accreditation standards. Their adoption marked a significant improvement over previous methods for managing at-risk inmates, which often included placing them in padded cells or providing flimsy paper gowns. Nick Reiner, facing two counts of first-degree murder, is currently scheduled for arraignment on January 7, 2026, with the vest serving as a visible indicator of perceived risk during his initial court appearance.

Nick Reiner's choice to wear a pop culture safety smock highlights how fashion can intersect with safety in unique and engaging ways.
